Plastic placemats instead of cardboard inside bags

The majority of the bag patterns you will find will ask you to put use cardboard inside or laying along the bottom of a bag to help keep a bag's shape. You can not wash cardboard.  Once it gets wet, it disintegrates.

Try plastic place mats cut to shape instead.  Do not use vinyl place mats with the foam backing, they are not sturdy enough.  You should be able to stitch it into place with your machine without any special needle to prevent it from shifting.

Recycle your old plastic place mats!

  1. The plastic grid for cross stitch could be used as well.

  3. I use the plastic sheets mentioned in BobbieSue's comment. I cut two the size needed and insert them into the fabric pocket and they are a perfect for a sturdy bottom.

  4. a single layer of plastic cross stitch grid will sag... but a double or triple layer works.

I also use the bottom of a large laundry detergent bottle if the bag has a 'cooperative' shape.

WHERE do they sell those plastic placemats? They are awesome for lots of things...
